Network Drives

Departmental Drives

Whenever you are logged into a department machine, you will have access to network drives along with the local drives in that particular system. The network drives may only be used for departmental related work and not for personal usage. The drives and their functions are described below:

  • Z Drive : This is your space for individual departmental use. You should always save your work and important files into this drive for future use. You can access this folder from any computer in the departmental network or in the Lab. Other than IT Support, you are the only person that will have access to your Z drive (with exception to your public_html folder). Space limited to 1GB, but if more is needed contact IT Support to discuss a higher allotment. DO NOT STORE YOUR WORK ON LAB MACHINES AS IT WILL BE REMOVED EVERY TIME YOU LOGOUT.
  • H Drive : This is a shared network drive where you can create a folder to share information for everyone in the department, as well as you can access others' folder and contents shared by Professors, students, and staff.

It is best practice to make regular back-ups of your important data.

Your Departmental Webpage

To create a basic departmental webpage, please follow the steps below:

In your Z drive folder, you have to create a folder and named it as 'public_html'.

'public_html' is a public folder available on the web. This folder is generally used for storing your personal webpage. To access this folder from website, you have to type in web address in your browser:

http://econweb.umd.edu/~yourusername Eg. If your username is smith, then it will be http://econweb.umd.edu/~smith.

There is more information available on creating a webpage here.
