VPN (Virtual Private Network)

The University of Maryland VPN service allows faculty and staff to connect to various services that are available only within UMD's internal network. Using this, your computer will behave as if it is physically on campus and connected to its network.

Downloading the VPN Client

You can download the University of Maryland's VPN client by visiting this link.

Installing the VPN Client

Once you have downloaded the client from the link above:

  1. Quit all programs that may be currently running.
  2. Click on the VPN Client Win file you downloaded. This will open an auto-extraction utility. Click Extract and it will extract the file to the directory in which VPN Client Win is located.
  3. Open the extracted file (anyconnect-win-3.1.01065-k9). (For Windows Vista/7 only, use the mouse to right-click the file if you are asked to run this as the Administrator. Click the left mouse button on Run as Administrator. Click Yes to continue if you see a warning message.)
  4. Click Next on the installation window.
  5. Read the License Agreement, click the button to agree to the terms.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Click Install.
  8. Click Finish.
  9. Restart your computer.

Connecting to UMD's VPN Network

  1. Find and run Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client in your Start Menu.
  2. This will bring up a window at the bottom right of your screen. Enter vpn.umd.edu into the text field and click Connect.
  3. Enter your University credentials (not your ECON credentials) into the popup window and click OK. NOTE: You will notice that there is a drop-down menu above where you enter your credentials. Make sure it is set to UMD before connecting.
  4. The VPN client will now perform any updates needed and connect you to the VPN.
  5. You are now successfully connected to the VPN. NOTE: If this is the first time you are using the client, you should confirm that it is working properly by visiting this link. If the VPN client is working properly, the web page will say that you are using an IP address in the format 12x.8.xxx.xxx (where “xxx” is any number).
